Looking at the ingredients label of USP Labs Pre-workout supplement jack3d, you see Dimethylamylamine. However, on the description page of Bodybuilding.com, they don’t describe what it is or what it does like the other main ingredients. Before doing some research, I knew absolutely nothing on Dimethylamylamine and doubt you do either. Even after doing some searching through google, there is not a lot of information available about it.
How much is in Jack3d
Dimethylamylamine is part of their proprietary blend so they don’t actually give you the exact dosage you are taking per serving. Over on the USP Labs forum, I saw a thread where someone asked how much Dimethylamylamine was in each scoop, but they declined to reveal that information.
What Is Dimethylamylamine
It was originally developed to be a nasal decongestant. Dimethylamylamine is a vasoconstrictor, restricts the size of blood vessels.
In dietary supplements, Dimethylamylamine is used as a stimulant. The guy who originally patented this supplement, stated that its stimulant effects were less than that of ephedrine and amphetamines. Others have also reported that it gives a nice stimulant effect without the jitters and can suppress your appetite.
Dimethylamylamine is not approved by the FDA and in 2009, the World Anti-Doping Agency added Dimethylamylamine to the 2010 prohibited list.
Possible Side Effects And Dosage
Users have reported side effects including headache, nausea, and stroke have been reported in recreational users of these products. A typical dose for supplementation with the pure extract is 25-50 mg.
On The Bodybuilding.com forum, some guys have also reported a side effect they call “stim dick“. Basically you can’t get a full boner when its in your system. That is definitely not bueno. This has occurred to me a few times, so beware of it. This was almost immediately after ending a training session though. Within 30 minutes of ending training, everything is good to go.
I have not experienced any other side effects.
Should I Take Dimethylamylamine?
Go for it if you are comfortable knowing there has not been much research done while using it as a supplement. If you are a collegiate athlete or know you going to be tested make sure you check the banned substance list before adding it to your supplement regime. I have noticed that a tolerance level builds quickly, leading to more and more to receive the same effects.
I have decided to take it and have no regrets so far.
1, 3-DIMETHYLAMYLAMINE In The News
The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) will be required to not label 1,3-dimethylamylamine (DMAA) as geranium oil taking effect January 13, 2012. Their reasoning being there is no evidence that DMAA is actually derived from geranium and instead a synthetic compound.
Resource: http://www.ahpa.org/Default.aspx?tabid=69&aId=707
As of mid last year (2011), DMAA has been banned for sale in Canada. Health Canada states that several studies have not been able to isolate DMAA from the germanium plant.
There official position is “any product containing DMAA requires authorization by Health Canada as [a] drug in order to be sold legally in Canada.”

In a complaint filed in the US District Court in the Central District of California against USPLabs, Johnnie Pacheco argues that the supplements OxyELITE Pro and Jack3d contain DMAA in a “synthetic form that is both illegal and dangerous”.
The US Department of Defense has temporarily banned the sale of products containing DMAA within military facilities following links to two recent soldier deaths.

USPLabs continues to claim that the 1,3-Dimethylamylamine in its Jack3d and OxyELITE Pro supplements has its origin from the germanium plant. USPLabs spokesman say they are currently working with scientists to prove these claims and the results will be published as soon as they are available.

The substance banned by the World Doping Agency is dimethylamphetamine, not dimethylamyamine
@Elliot – Here’s what I found…. from http://www.ironmagazineforums.com/supplements/103788-methylhexanamine-geranamine-officially-banned-wada.html
“If you’re competing in any sports where they drug test according to WADA’s (World Anti-Doping Agency) standards, do NOT take anything containing methylhexanamine (also known as Geranamine, 1,3-Dimethylamylamine and
4-methylhexan-2-amine, and sometimes just listed as Geranium Extract)!!
It wasn’t officially on WADA’s 2009 banned list — although everyone should have known better, because it shows up in most drug tests as a positive for amphetamine; even Patrick Arnold himself, who brought it to the sports nutrition market, warned against this — and now it IS officially on WADA’s 2010 prohibited list.”
People on that forum were saying that it is possible to test positive for amphetamine.
It is safe in doses of 25mgs, but I wouldn’t risk it as a drug tested athlete
@Elite Nutrition –
Thanks for the comment.
The only problem is that most supplements use proprietary blends which don’t give specifics on the amount of each ingredient as does Jack3d.
As a vasoconstrictor, caffeine is not that powerful. The connection between stimulants and vasoconstriction is that adrenaline is a vasoconstrictor, and all stimulants mimic the effects of adrenaline.
@Neal – Thanks for the insight Neal
Can u test positive for meth if your taking jack3d
@Roger – Here’s what I found:

Hey man do you think jack3d is illegal in some countries? I live in argentina and dont wanna get in trouble if i bring it in my luggage.
@Leo – Hey Leo,
I have not found anything in google that states that jack3d or 1, 3-dimethylamylamine is banned in specific countries. If anyone else has info leave a comment
I have taken Nuke from Muscle Warfare which has this in it as well. I’m not sure if the product has caused the headache I got tonight, or if i got it because it made me push so much damn harder than normal. I took Jack3d and don’t remember the headache, but it also did a good job of winding me up! The Nuke label also says to cycle on and off.
@Aaron C. –
Thanks for the comment Aaron. BTW I have never experienced headaches from supplements containing 1,3 so it may be something else in the Nuke.
Dimethylamylamine is bad stuff , stay well away from it , i have used many pre workouts before without Dimethylamylamine in it and when i started to take this pre work out called kronic pump that contains Dimethylamylamine 1-3 i started losing sleep and becoming very iritable and agitated at silly things, the girlfriend said it has changed my personality and she dosent know me anymore since iv been taking it, im giving my supply away as i feel like i have roid rage , its good for the pump and the mental focus but what comes up must come down , its just not worth it and its nearly cost me my relationship
@johny – Thanks for the comment johny. I haven’t had any negative sides from taking jack3d which contains the 1,3 Di. I guess everyone acts differently to it. No supplement is worth side effects like those you mentioned.
I’ve been diagnosed with minor heart palpatations which occur on rare occasion and I am told by my physician to be normal. The rate at which they occur have greatly decreased since I stopped smoking the green years ago. But they have increased again during my 2nd “on’ cycle of jack3d, both while its in my system and not. Also I don’t like how high my heartrate gets while doing cardio on it. Not sure if its due to the Dimethylamylamine, but I’m gonna try a Supp without it to see if anything changes..
Rito,
My guess is that its the caffeine that affected your heart. I don’t have any asthma or known heart conditions but when I ran NCAA distance track last year, I absolutely couldn’t take Jack3d because any large amount of caffeine gave me trouble breathing and a faster, than usual, heartrate. In my case, though, it was 7+ miles instead of 15 min cardio and I would have to stop because my chest would be pounding. Being done with track, I use it occasionally for lifting but never cardio and it works wonders pumping me up.
Also, it is not illegal, just banned in most sports for as a “doping agent” which was a pretty good deterrent during track as well ;] Moderation, if any, is my opinion.
@Caden – Thanks for your input Caden. Good stuff
My 16 year old son, who is 6’1, 175 lbs, very heathy. Plays basketball and lifts weight 4 days a week. He started taking Jack3d about 2 months ago. He was hospitalized for 2 days. He was having seizure like muscle spasms. After all testing was done (Brain scan, MRI, EEG, EKG, blood work etc). All tests came back normal..we actually thought he was having massive seizures. He wasn’t having seizures at all. The doctors, including Neurologist, said that it was caused by his intake with the protein powder. I can’t tell you how awful it is to see your son in a hospital bed having MASSIVE MUSCLE SPASMS..HUNDREDS OF THEM..for 2 days straight. He is home now resting,, and after 2 days of IV’s..most of the protein powder has left his body. He still has small twitches, that we are hopeful will go away completely! Every BODY is different, but the ingredients in this product (which is not FDA Approved) can harm your body! Please see a nutritionist and get the proper protein supplements that are good for your body! No PUMP is worth your life! Don’t LET YOUR SON GET JACKED!!!
@MoM – I’ve taken Jacked cycling on and off for about a year now and haven’t had any problems with it. I know that every person’s body is different, but before you blame it on the supplement maybe you should see if he was taking it correctly. Did he take no more than 3 scoops per day? Did he only take it for a max of 5 days straight with 2 days off? Did he cycle off of it? All these factors play a big role in keeping your body from having problems as your son had. If he did not follow these instructions than you can’t blame the product. By the way Jack3d is a stimulant and not a protein powder. They are completely different from one another.
I just learned that what I was taking has 1, 3 in it I have been taking it for
2 years now I have never had a prob with it. so what’s all the talk about
It works or it dont stop bitching
Sorry wrong site. yal trying to learn about it
Yal are smart.
Thanks for the comment Todd. I’ve never had an major issue with it either.
It’s not called “jack 3 d”, it’s called Jack3d as in “jacked”.
What a lot of people fail to notate when they criticize a product of giving them health issues is that they also have taken other supplements in conjunction with stated 1,3 product. Not to mention, they also never read the directions properly.
Most of the symptoms described on here are most commonly attributed to over consumption of caffeine. 1 scoop in many of these drinks is in fact -2 servings-; 2 servings is roughly 300-400mg of caffeine; average coffee is 60mg per cup. There lies the root of most of your problem.
Thanks for the comment Riggs. I agree with you. I’ll nitpick and say that coffee has a lil bit more caffeine than 60 mg.
A 7 oz cup of coffee has the following caffeine (mg) amounts, according to Bunker and McWilliams in J. Am. Diet. 74:28-32, 1979:
Drip 115-175
Brewed 80-135
Instant 65-100
Decaf, brewed 3-4
Decaf, instant 2-3
The military is looking at this product again and has removed it from shelves on many bases. See link: http://www.dscp.dla.mil/subs/fso/alfood/2011/alf03611.pdf
Thanks for the link
I work in an ER and recently had a 22yr old male, other wise healthy, on this product. He had passed out because he was taking this product and it threw his heart into atrial fibrillation which can cause stroke. This is a known and listed side effect of this supplement. He did come back borderline positive for meth from taking this supplement. I know this person and know he does take meth. This is not a safe supplement! It is not FDA approved and as with all supplements including vitamins and herbals should be used with caution. You don’t have to believe me, but please be cautious with this supplement. For you military guys, I would avoid it if you value your career.
You meant to say he does NOT take meth right?
While I have no experience with Jack3d I am on my second cycle of Oxy Elite Pro, also by USP Labs, also containing 1, 3-DIMETHYLAMYLAMINE. Here’s what I experienced: raised states of aggression, increased blood pressure, loss of appetite, incredible thirst, insomnia, and of course, some awesome stim dick. However I did lose 35 lbs in six weeks and saw my abs for the first time in twenty years.
Hi everyone.
I have just purchased 1,3-DIMETHYLAMYLAMINE FAT BURNER, GERANIUM EXTRACT = ENERGY, off ebay, my reason being is that I need that boost in energy to do vigorous exercise to lose weight and tone up. Also I am studying and the extra focus would help.
My question is, is 1,3 Di addictive? I have had unfortunate addictions in the past with drugs, and know I have addictive nature. I was looking for something that is legal, that wont mess me up like the drugs in my past, that will give me a small buzz and help me achieve my weight goals.
I have another question, with reference to ‘stim dick’, well I am a 25 yo female, obviously ‘stim dick’ wont be an issue for me, but is there any unfortunate effects equivalent for females?
1. Not addictive
2. My girl friend has taken it without any side effects. However, she has never taken it on a consistent basis. Just random times when she needs a boost pre workout.
@johny – u arent exp enough to make that judgement on jack3d, ive got exactly the same but the only reason it happens is when u take too much to often and ive tried pure geranium it can cause massive aggression on high doses like i was on juice it is the most powerful supplement ive ever taken and stronger than most drugs in large doses puts speed to shame.
@Jason Y – just replying to your statement about not finding the dosages of it i found a website( CON-CRĒT | The World’s First and Only Pure Concentrated Creatine) they use 25 mg i think mixed with pure creatine extract and they say it can lead to positive tests but not always and its called BETA-CRETE it works wonderful i have stacked that with there regular CON-CRETE and im getting up head turning weight with no side effects. theses guys have really researched this and know there stuff.
@Rob –
Buddy I am with ya on that!
Ive had heart palpitations, horny like crazy but a limp dick (figure that out)
higher blood pressure, head aches, dizzy spells,
However… the work outs have been insane and i love the pumps ive been getting!
So i am going off Jack3d cause the gf is really up set with me! hahaha
Mark, how much are you taking to get those sides?
I’ve had jack3d, S.A.W, oxyelite pro and not had bad effects anywhere near the old ephedrine based products but having said that with the energy drinks like jack3d and S.A.W I would NOT recommend taking more than 1 scoop – it says 1-3 on the tubs – 2-3 scoop doses will give you some awful side effects like some mentioned so I’m guessing some of these horror stories are from the high doses.
Off one scoop or 1 oxyelite pro I do cardio and my heart rate is normal and I can train harder with no negative effects and not much of a come down apart from a bit tired. Oxyelites I take 1 per day for 3 days then 2 per day for a further 5 days then have a week off. Again no negative effects and dont feel awful and jittery like the old ephedrine products.
P.S Any old school guys remember the original “ultimate orange”? . . . Now that was a dangerous energy drink . . but what a workout!! haha
Thanks the comment Scott. The down side for 1,3, is that you build tolerance to it quickly so staying at that 1 scoop of jack3d for a long time leads to less and less of an effect. This leads people to start taking more and more of it and possibly the bad sides we hear about.
@MoM –
hey there MOM your son is only 16 years old should not be taking any supplements his body isnt even fully developed yet and the jack 3d label states right on it intended for use by healthy ADULTS 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER!!!
Jack3d doesn’t do anything to me; 1, 2, 3 scoops, with extra 1,3 powder, without it, nothing. And, I don’t drink soda/coffee, or eat junk food. Then again, 1MR and C4 don’t work either, so it’s probably just me.
AMEN!!! @chris -
hey there i was just wondering how long this takes to get out of your system, lets say i took it monday afternoon, would i pass a test on wednesday morning, just curious
Well since DMAA is structurally similar to amphetamines, its prob’ly similar to that. I am guessing here btw. Searching through the first page of google, amphetamines are detectable for 2-4 days.
@MoM – Well he might have been extremely dehydrated. Too much protein, and caffiene in Jack 3d combined with the creatine in Jack is a super diuretic. Plus on top of the all the working out. I do not use Jack but I use creatine, caffience, and protein powder (not too much anymore) but I am more likely to cramp up if I use them all around each other without drinking lots of water.
I’ve used Jack3d for 6 months and have had minimal side effects. They seem to be mostly higher blood pressure, stomach aches, diarrhea and sleep issues. Workouts have been more intense, but the side effects aren’t worth the trouble. I’ll go back to my creatine routine.
I’ve been taking 1 3 dmaa regularly for a couple years and have never had any problems. It gets me pumped up and focused for my workouts. I would just recommend using the proper dosage 25-50 mg and staying well hydrated. I used to take jack3d now i just buy 1 3 dimethylamylamine in bulk from buypuredmaa.com and take it with some caffeine
