It may be surprising to you that steroid use in sport in nothing new. Tracing the history of anabolic steroids reveals the prevalence of its use among athletes in ancient Greece. These professional athletes used natural steroidal substances in order to enhance anabolic growth in their bodies.

Now looking at the recent history of steroids, in the 1930s, German scientists discovered the drug in modern pharmaceutical form. However, at this time there was no immediate interest in pursing more research in anabolic steroid uses and possibilities.

After about two decades without anymore specific research, the first scientific attention to steroids came in the 1950s. This was when the FDA approved the use of methandrostenone and dianabol for the use in the United States of America because of its promising trials in foreign countries.

There was small amount of research and clinical trials performed between the 1960s and 1980s because there were still doubts about the drugs safety and effectiveness. This was compounded by a study in 1972 that found no significant difference between steroid users and placebo users.

A huge advancement in the possibilities of steroids occurred in 1996. The National Institutes of Health,or NIH, studied the drug by injected individuals with 600 milligrams of testosterone enanthate for a duration of ten weeks. The results were definite, users experienced increased muscle mass and a decrease in body fat.

Prior to this study completed by NIH, the United States Congress instituted the Anabolic Steroid Act of 1990. This termed anabolic steroids as a Schedule II in the Controlled Substances Act.

Since then other laws have been passed, the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004. This legislation placed steroids and prohormones on the controlled substances list.
